Reading Food Labels for Weight Loss
By Brian Gallichan
Reading food labels sounds like an easy task, but for many people it is a chore. Reading food labels is a good thing to do, especially when trying to lose weight.
Reading food labels can involve basic math such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. By knowing how to read food labels, you will be able to make an educated decision as to whether or not a specific item would be a good choice for you to eat when trying to lose weight.
It is best to read food labels from the top to the bottom. The top of the food label lists the amount of product that constitutes a serving. The next figure listed tells how many total servings are included in the package.
As you move down the list, you will see the amount of calories, fat, Cholesterol, sodium, carbohydrates and protein. On the right side of the label, you will see the percentage of daily value for these nutrients.
Pay no attention to these percentages as they do not apply to the majority of people. At the bottom of the food label is listed the amounts of certain vitamins that the product contains.
As far as weight loss is concerned, you are only concerned with the calorie count and the sodium count. Ultimately, the only way that a person can gain weight is if he eats more calories than his body uses. However, if a person eats a lot of sodium, his body will store fluid and he will look bloated.
