Protein and Weight Loss
By Brian Gallichan
Protein is found in every muscle of the body, as well as in the bones and organs. Protein is absolutely essential for the proper function of the human body.
Protein serves to build strong bones, ligaments, joints and muscles. Protein also makes hemoglobin, which delivers oxygen to our cells.
Protein is not, however, responsible for the loss of fat, though many people are trying to lose fat on a high protein diet.
If anyone is losing weight by eating a high protein diet, they are losing only water weight, not body fat. It takes a lot of water to excrete protein from the body, and most people do not drink enough water in the first place.
If the body is unable to excrete the protein, it is highly likely that kidney stones will form. It also takes a lot of calcium to excrete protein from the body, and if the diet is too rich in protein, the body leaches the bones for calcium and osteoporosis develops.
The body needs only 25 to 35 grams of protein per day to function properly. If you look at a food label, you will not see a percentage of daily value corresponding to the amount of protein listed.
This is because the body needs so little protein that it is virtually impossible not to get enough of it in the foods that we eat.
As far as percentages go, 2.5% of total calories is all that a person requires for perfect health. The best protein is found in raw fruits, vegetables, seeds, and nuts. Cooked protein is toxic and does not absorb into the bloodstream well.
