Measuring Bodyfat
By Brian Gallichan
Measuring body fat is a crucial aspect of weight loss. If you do not know how much body fat you have, then you do not know how much body fat you have to lose.
Body fat is not the same as body weight, because body weight includes bones, fluid, ligaments, tendons, organs and muscle in addition to fat. Measuring body fat is easy, and this article tells you how to do it.
The first step in measuring body fat is to determine your body mass index value. Divide your weight in pounds by your height in inches squared, and then multiply this number by 703. The resulting number is your BMI value.
The second step in measuring body fat is to calculate your body fat percentage using your BMI value. The formula for females is (1.20 x BMI) + (0.23 x Age ) - 5.4. The formula for males is (1.20 x BMI) + (0.23 x Age) - 16.2. The resulting number is your body fat percentage.
The last step in measuring body fat is to determine how many pounds of fat are actually on your body based on your body fat percentage. To do this, you simply multiply your body fat percentage by your total weight.
The resulting number is the amount of fat pounds that are currently on your body. If you then subtract this number from your total body weight, you will have your lean body mass, which is how much you would weigh without having any fat at all.
