Herbs and Weight Loss
By Brian Gallichan
Herbs have existed for thousands of years, and it has long been known that herbs have been responsible for many miraculous events, including curing incurable diseases and causing weight loss in the obese.
Herbs serve as wonderful supplements to a weight loss diet and most herbs are known to be very healthy. When it comes to weight loss, three herbs in particular are most effective.
One herb that causes weight loss is licorice root. Licorice root satisfies cravings for sweets and suppresses the appetite.
Studies have shown that body fat mass decreases with the consumption of licorice root. Furthermore, licorice root as well as most other herbs, is very low in calories.
A second herb that is effective for weight loss is psyllium. Psyllium is a soluble fiber that is responsible for providing a feeling of fullness and reducing hunger.
Psyllium also relieves constipation by pushing waste out of the digestive tract. Psyllium works best when taken either before bedtime or first thing in the morning, about thirty minutes before meals.
A third weight loss herb is St. Johns wort. St. Johns wort increases serotonin levels in the brain, and suppresses appetite. St. Johns wort makes the body feel like it is not hungry anymore, making it easier to not overeat.
St. Johns wort is used to treat depression, which sometimes causes people to eat more food than is necessary. The increase of serotonin caused by St. Johns wort causes a person to not be depressed, and hopefully to eat less food, thus eliminating weight gain.
